Richard Wagner
Das Rheingold
George London, Kirsten Flagstad, Claire Watson, Eberhard Wächter, Waldemar Kmentt, Set Svanholm, Jean Madeira, Gustav Neidlinger, Paul Kuen, Walter Kreppel, Kurt Böhme, Oda Balsborg, Hetta Plumacher, Ira Malaniuk
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
Georg Solti
Today the CD listings are clogged with complete 'Ring' cycles as well as issues of the individual operas but in the late 1950s, when Decca decided to record the complete epic, they were breaking new ground as a recording of the musical monster had never been attempted. As Decca decided to begin with 'Das Rheingold', the other record companies scoffed and predicted gloom and doom over the enterprise. What came out of Vienna was a remarkable version which broke new ground in sound - let alone the interpretation. The recording is too famous to review but it must be said that the recording still sounds wonderful and, even after all these years, the balance and forward sound could be rediscovered when one hears so many badly balanced recordings which are thrust on the public today. All the cast are excellent with an aging Flagstad, who learned the role for the recording being the plum. Neidlinger is in ringing voice as Alberich and London is a dignified, if somewhat woolly Wotan. Kuen's Mime is superbly sung and acted and Madeira's powerful Erda is one of the best I have ever heard - need I go on? The Vienna Philharmonic are at their blazing best but, I suppose, the stars of the set are the famous anvils, along with Donner's hefty bash - followed by a thrilling thunder effect. Solti's conducting is dynamic but he always finds time to let the music breathe. This is still a highly recommended recording.
