Richard Wagner
Duets from Die Walküre and Der fliegende Höllander
Der fliegende Höllander
Act 2: Wie aus der Ferne
Die Walküre
Act 3: Scene 3
Birgit Nilsson, Hans Hotter
Philharmonia Orchestra
Leopold Ludwig
Recorded before the famous Solti complete 'Ring' which featured Hotter and Nilsson in these roles, this LP reveals a younger sounding Nilsson and a more secure Hotter. To have the whole of the final duet from 'Die Walkure' makes this a worth while listen and their performances are magnificent. As an 'extra', the LP begins with the Love Duet, if one can call it that, from 'Der Fliegende Hollander'. Nilsson is less comfortable as Senta but she sings with gusto and Hotter is a powerful Dutchman. The Philharmonia play the music with clarity and produce a natural sound. The balance between singers and orchestra is better than many modern recordings. One of the reasons for the excellence of this record is down to the conductor. Leopold Ludwig is now largely forgotten but, in his time, he was a highly respected conductor who produced powerful and exciting performances. There are precious few recordings of his around but this LP should show what a great conductor he was. The performances are unhurried but he has the measure of the music and shapes the scores both beautifully and dramatically. This is Wagner at its best.
