Rita Streich possessed a remarkable voice which could embrace the serious as well as comic. This LP reveals a little of her range and there are many treasures to be found but, for us, the highlight of the disc is the beautiful Saint-Saens 'The Nightingale and the Rose' where the orchestra represents the flower and the soprano the nightingale. It is such a shame that this singer proved a difficult colleague - but, there it is - one can't have everything. The recordings are from various recording sessions and are very good with a fine balance between the singer and orchestra(s).
