Richard Strauss
Vier letzte Lieder
Kirsten Flagstad, soprano
Philharmonia Orchestra
Wilhelm Furtwangler
Live London 1950
Robert Schumann
Dichterliebe
Gerard Souzay, baritone
Alfred Cortot, piano
Live Paris 1956
Although the 'Dichterliebe' is fascinating enough with Souzay and Cortot underplaying the cycle wonderfully, it is the Richard Strauss 'Vier Letzte Lieder' which is the real treasure on this LP. It is historically very important for various reasons but, to begin with, we had better indicate some reservations about it which might make you think twice about purchasing it. First, it is NOT the premiere of the work but the rehearsal so, although she was perfectly able to reach the top note, Flagstad only 'marks' them. As the recording was made on acetate, there is considerable surface noise in many of the songs - also, the Maharishi of Mysore, who made the records, only thought to preserve the vocal part so many of the songs' codas are missing - including the finale. Having said all that, it is still a wonderful chance to get a feeling of the First Performance and, it must be remembered, that all the horn solos are played by Denis Brain! A highly recommended LP but only for those who are into important Historic sound documents.

Our records have always been handled with care and stored correctly. However as we are disposing of our entire record collection, time precludes us playing every single item to check whether there are any faults that are not apparent from a purely visual check. To avoid any dispute buyers should be aware that they buy our vinyl with the above proviso in mind.
