Gustav Mahler
Symphony No.6
Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra
Rafael Kubelik
Rückert Lieder
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, baritone
Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra
Karl Böhm
The current trend for interpreting Mahler's 'Symphony No 6' is to make it as slow and darkly sinister as possible. In this Double LP, Kubelik blasts that idea right out of the water. With the exception of the Fourth Movement, he adopts a fairly brisk tempo and thus he reveals another quality contained in the music. The sound is typical DG with the large orchestra sometimes sounding almost chambery and the engineers select some very odd balances where a celesta can almost drown out the full orchestra. Having said that, it is still an exciting listen and will certainly delight all Mahler aficionados. The Fourth Side is devoted to the 'Rückert Lieder' with Fischer-Dieskau. This set of Lieder is beautifully sung by this famous baritone and sensitively conducted by Böhm. This is a fascinating Double Disc set.
