Gustav Mahler
Symphony No.6
Utah Symphony Orchestra
Maurice Abravanel
First, it must be said that the pressings on Sides 2 and 3 are poor. They probably need a good clean. Also, the LPs are on auto change coupling which is rather annoying but not terminally so. The actual performance is, generally, very good but it does seem rather odd that the internal balance of the orchestra changes from movement to movement. The timpani in the second movement is suddenly sitting on the microphones when it has been placed comfortably at the back for the rest of the symphony. There are other oddities as well but we will leave it to you to discover these. Interestingly, Abravanel leaves out the third hammer blow (more of a boom than a bang) in the fourth Movement which goes along with Mahler's final intentions. Habing said all that, Abravanel's conducting is very good and his slower tempi work well.
