Johann Strauss II
Die Fledermaus: Overture
Franz Liszt
Piano Concerto No.1
Annie Fischer, piano
Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy
A Midsummer Night's Dream - Incidental Music
Heather Harper, soprano
Janet Baker, mezzo soprano
Philharmonia Chorus
Philharmonia Orchestra
Otto Klemperer
So, Klemperer conducting Mendelssohn? Will he make it sound like Brahms? No! Surprisingly, on this CD Klemperer shows a delicacy in this music which is utterly delightful. He keeps the score moving and manages to bring out the magical elements of the music. As a bonus, we have Heather Harper and Janet Baker as the two soloists. Baker, at the early part of her career. The sound is full, warm and natural with the soloists and chorus blending beautifully. Especially memorable is his version of 'Ye Spotted Snakes'. Annie Fischer was one of the great pianists and known for her fiery performances. If you doubt this - just listen to her power her way through the Liszt 'Piano Concerto No 1'. Poor Klemperer must have wondered what had hit him as he had to adopt a fast tempo to keep up with her.
