Richard Wagner
Parsifal
James King, Gwyneth Jones, Franz Crass, Thomas Stewart, Donald McIntyre, Karl Ridderbusch
Chorus and Orchestra of the Bayreuth Festival
Pierre Boulez
When Bayreuth reopened after WWII, 'Parsifal' was interpreted on a grand scale with plenty of solid architecture in the interpretation - mainly through Knappertsbusch who conducted most of the performances up to 1964. This style continued until 1970 when Boulez came along and blew the tradition apart. His fast tempi shocked, yet thrilled, the Bayreuth audience and he managed to elicit applause - which was never done for Parsifal at Bayreuth. This audience response sent Wagnerians rushing off to look up what Wagner said about applause and as far as he was concerned - he really wasn't that bothered. Here ends the history lesson! This performance is certainly a lot faster than what you are used to, but Boulez manages to structure the work so well, that, once you get used to it, the fast tempi certainly adds another dimension to the opera. The singers are superb with Franz Crass a lightweight Gurnemanz and King a youthful Parsifal. How Ms. Jones' voice manages to survive all those full blooded screams I will never know. The recording is excellent with a fine balance between stage and pit. This is a must for all Wagner fans as you will rarely hear a 'Parsifal' like this!
