Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Serenade for String Orchestra
USSR State Symphony Orchestra
Kyril Kondrashin
Cover Autographed by Kyril Kondrashin
The autograph was collected outside the Festival Hall in about 1974 when Kondrashin was still Chief Conductor of the Moscow Philharmonic. I had the privilege of seeing him in many concerts and meeting this Great Conductor many times and it was always a surprise to watch the man on the podium who seemed to have his intense eyes everywhere and in total control of the glorious sounds he managed to draw out of the orchestra and then to meet and talk to him. Face to face he had a slightly impish look and had an easy smile. Another thing which never ceased to amaze me was his modesty. He could never take a compliment but always brushed it aside with a shrug and gave all the credit to the music and the orchestra. I only ever saw him with his ‘minders’ who he obviously resented but when they saw that I was merely a music nutter and not a mole who was there to help him defect, left us alone so we could talk candidly.
There is a delightful story in connection with the autograph... When I offered the LP for him to sign he peered at it and said, 'Look at that. One work - TWO conductors!' He shook his head in mock despair and continued, 'No, no, no! It's my record!' and, with a flourish, drew a line through Mravinsky's name (you can see his editing in the photo).
This recording of the 'Serenade' is utterly delightful with Kondrashin relishing every bar - especially in the Waltz movement where his holding back of the strings at key moments will both charm and make you smile. Sadly, the poor pressing means that the very end of the Waltz is a little noisy - but not so much as to ruin your enjoyment. For us, this is the best version of the 'Serenade' ever committed to disc and one wishes that Kondrashin had recorded Elgar's 'Introduction and Allegro'.
