Gustav Mahler
Des Knaben Wunderhorn
Janet Baker, soprano
Geraint Evans, baritone
London Philharmonic Orchestra
Wyn Morris
This gatefold album has Janet Baker and Geraint Evans' autograph's inside.
Although the orchestra sounds a little chamberish, the close recording and Morris' attention to orchestral colour and detail makes this an LP to remember. The brass and percussion are forward and blend with the singers superbly - although, the sound slightly favours the soloists. And what soloists! True, Evans may have a slight vibrato but he sings with great feeling. Baker on the other hand is almost faultless. Her rendition of 'Das Irdiche Leben' is particularly moving. For us, this is still the best version of these songs as there in as intimacy about the recording and performances.
Janet Baker's autograph was collected outside the Festival Hall, London and Geraint Evans' was obtained outside the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London after he had sung Falstaff. Both are circa 1967.
