Most well known recordings of Flagstad are from the 1950s where, though in glorious voice, can make her sound a little matronly. These recordings from the 1930s capture her voice in all its youthful radiance. Although the arias are wonderful enough - even if they have some hilarious orchestra endings, it is the finale of the 'Gotterdammerung' which must take the star prize. Her interpretation is utterly statuesque and powerful - yet young and vulnerable. Ormandy's conducting has an urgency yet he never fails to let the music breathe when required, This LP is a must for all fans of the Great Norwegian Soprano.
