George Frideric Handel
Messiah
Jennifer Vyvyan, Monica Sinclair, Jon Vickers, Giorgio Tozzi
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus
Thomas Beecham
These days, listeners tend to look down their noses at this recording of 'Messiah' under Beecham - especially the purists. The conductor uses the Leonard Salzedo orchestration of the score (Eugene Goossens is usually credited with it but he had nothing to do with it!) and that, along with Beecham's approach causes the score to sound more like Mendelsson than Handel. The line up of singers is excellent for this version but they hardly sound like Handel interpreters. The sound is forward and with a good stereo spread which captures both trombones and cymbals (yes, that's how overblown the version is!) very well. If you are after a decidedly daft recording of the famous oratorio this this set is ideal. It is also ideal for those who have a healthy antipathy towards the current trend of 'authentic' performances played on original instruments.

To avoid any dispute buyers should be aware that they buy our vinyl with the above proviso in mind.
