George Friderich Handel
Music for the Royal Fireworks
Concerto A Due Cori in F major
Pro Arte Orchestra
Charles Mackerras
To call the orchestra 'Pro Arte' is somewhat of a joke. Being as Mackerras has served up the Original orchestration of Handel's popular 'Fireworks Music', the actual orchestra is slightly crazy with the inclusion of 26 oboes, 14 bassoons, 3 timpanists and 6 side drums. There are more! We believe it was recorded at about 2.00 AM in a church. It had to be scheduled then as every orchestra, both opera and concert, as well as music college students were roped in to play. The result is staggering. The sound of this orchestral group is thrilling. The sound is full on and the whole effect is to hear a work for the very first time. Because the sound is so forward, the recording distorts a little and Pye pressings were never of the best. The other side is another fascinating work which, once again, Mackerras endevours to give us the true feel of what Handel was after. This LP is a must for all lovers of music.
