Richard Wagner
Götterdämmerung (Highlights)
Daybreak and Siegfried's Rhine Journey
Siegfried's Funeral Music
Brünnhilde's Immolation
Rita Hunter, Alberto Remedios
London Philharmonic Orchestra
Charles Mackerras
Having seen Charles Mackerras conduct the famous ENO ‘Ring’ when Goodall was obviously given a few days off, it was with great anticipation from all interested parties when this LP was released. I must confess that I have problems with Goodall’s ‘Ring’ and the tempo is too slow for me but when Mackerras did it, one felt as if he had breathed a new spirit onto the score. Though this recording is with the London Philharmonic, there are traces of his ENO interpretation. It is also good to have Remedios and Hunter singing their roles in German and the large studio sound enhances the wonderful performances. Mackerras isn’t frightened of letting the orchestra play out and there are many delights to be enjoyed. His final cataclysm is out of this world. This is a very highly recommended Vinyl.
