Edvard Grieg
Piano Concerto in A minor
Robert Schumann
Piano Concerto in A minor
Solomon, piano
Herbert Menges
Philharmonia Orchestra
Solomon Cutner dropped his surname and simply went under his first name. Sadly, when he was at the height of his career, he suffered a stroke which robbed the world of, arguably, the greatest pianist of his time. Known for his powerful performances, this LP gives ample evidence of this performing strength. Even so, he was still able to extract the tender moments from any score. This excellent recording is forward, warm and with a good balance between the orchestra and soloist. Menges was an underrated conductor and he allows Solomon to shine but is not frightened of the louder passages in both Concerti. This LP is a must for all lovers of the piano. Top marks!
