Chorus and Orchestra of the Bayreuth Festival
Herbert von Karajan
For the reopening of the Bayreuth Festival in 1951 one of the ‘Ring’ conductors was Karajan. This mono recording was made but never intended to be released. The sound is rather crowded but the historic value outweighs the poor sound. Karajan’s conducting is on the fast side and he certainly brings out the power of the work remarkably well. Sigurd Björling (no relation to Jussi) is, for me, the finest Wotan ever. Though he was accused of being somewhat melodramatic, he sings beautifully and his secure voice is a joy. The rest of the cast sing and act to great effect and one can never be bored by this performance. Schwarzkopf is a Rheinmaiden! There is one slightly sad thing about this recording. The soprano who was due to sing Fricka fell ill at the last minute and Ira Malaniuk, who had never sung, or indeed knew the role agreed to step in to save the production. She attempted to learn it in about a day and, although she manages very well, there are times (especially at the end) where the momentous task defeats her so, when you hear she has made some major errors and is generally all over the place, without her we wouldn’t have this valuable sound document. Incidentally, after her Bayreuth Experience, she settled down to learn the role and became a stunning Fricka.
This rare copy of the Melodram pressing has been played quite a bit so the price reflects the condition of the set.

To avoid any dispute buyers should be aware that they buy our vinyl with the above proviso in mind.
