Bedřich Smetana
The Brandenburgers in Bohemia
Karel Kalaš, Jiří Joran, Ivo Žídek, Zdeněk Otava, Antonín Votava, Bohumír Vích, Milada Šubrtová, Miloslava Fidlerová, Věra Soukupová, Eduard Haken, Jindřich Jindrák
Prague National Theatre Chorus and Orchestra
Jan Hus Tichý
This early opera of Smetana may be a little patchy in its composition with influences from Verdi - especially the end of Act 1 but there are arias, duets and choruses in the score which are magnificent. Žídek's voice is very Eastern European in flavour and he sings heroically. The rest of the cast match his power and intelligence with the chorus and orchestra singing and playing with effective enthusiasm. Tichý's conducting never flags and he holds the opera together with skill. The recording is forward but the sound has the soloists a little too forward. As ever, Supraphon pressings were not of the best but this one isn't too bad.
