Dame Clara Butt, contralto

Thomas Beecham
Kurt Atterberg
Symphony No. 6
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Thomas Beecham
This is a fascinating LP of early recordings of Thomas Beecham but the two treasures are the Atterberg 'Dollar' Symphony which receives a spirited delivery and German's 'Have you news of my boy Jack?' The short work is intoned by the mannish voice of Clara Butt of 'Land of Hope and Glory' fame. How could such a pretty woman produce such a deep voice - there again - Jean Madeira? The text is by Kipling but is NOT a plea for news of his son, John, reported missing in WW1.
