Richard Wagner
Die Walküre Act 3
Todesverkündigung Scene Act 2
Marianne Schech, Set Svanholm, Kirsten Flagstad, Otto Edelmann, Oda Balsborg, Ilona Steingruber, Grace Hofmann, Margaret Bence, Clare Watson, Anny Delorie, Frieda Roesler, Hetty Plümacher
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
Georg Solti
This Act 3 was recorded as a bit of an experiment by Decca as to the possibility of recording the whole of the 'Ring'. Although not fully successful, the lessons learned allowed Decca to go ahead with the project and the rest, as they say, is history. For this try out, Decca couldn't have chosen more important singers. Flagstad may not sound the boisterous and girly Brünnhilde, but she brings to the recording all her knowledge and experience of the role and she delivers some phrases which no other singer manages to bring off. Schech is sweet sounding as Sieglinde and Edelmann is a dignified and rather youthful sounding Wotan and, my goodness, does he sing the role with style. The Valkyries are strongly cast with some well known singers, many of whom were to sing in the complete 'Ring' recording. As a bonus we have the confrontation between Siegmund and his Aunt in Act 2. Svanholm, like Flagstad, was getting on in years but he still manages to sound like a tragic hero. The recording is a little boxy up to what Decca was to develop but the orchestra has plenty of impact and the balance between the sings and the Vienna Phil is excellent.
The main reason to buy this box set of LPs is that Georg Solti has signed the Libretto TWICE!
Please note that we are prepared to sell the booklet separately in which case the postage costs will be adjusted accordingly.
If you would care to purchase either the Booklet or Box set and records separately, then please contact us so we can quote you a different price. Naturally, the Vinyl and box will be considerably cheaper on their own.
