Richard Wagner
Tristan und Isolde - Prelude and Liebestod
Lohengrin - Prelude to Act 1
Der fliegender Holländer - Overture
Tannhäuser - Overture
Hallé Orchestra
John Barbirolli
These performances are taken from the old Pye recordings and, as such, the sound is hardly Hi-Fi. Even so, the slightly dry sound cannot hide the warmth and highly intelligent performances of these works by Wagner. Barbirolli didn't record much Wagner but he often conducted the composer in concerts. His bringing out details without losing the overall structures of the works is fascinating and his tempi seem so right. This LP is a must for all lovers of superb conducting and, especially Barbirolli.
