Edvard Grieg
Piano Concerto
Gina Bachauer, piano
Norwegian Dances
Lyric Suite
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
George Weldon
Although her name suggests otherwise, Gina Bachauer was, in fact, Greek. In her time, she was a highly respected and admired pianist who also had a great talent for teaching. Although there are only a few precious recordings of her, those that were made reveal why she earned her reputation. Her version of the Grieg Concerto is thrilling and she manages to dash off the tricky passages with deceptive ease. She tends to adopt a faster tempo but never hurries the work. The rest of the LP is taken up with some delightful extras. Weldon is a conductor who was overshadowed during his career by Beecham and Barbirolli but he still managed to record many items. Perhaps this LP will help you reevaluate this almost forgotten master of the podium.
