Richard Wagner
Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg
Otto Wiener, Hans Hotter, Benno Kusche, Jess Thomas, Claire Watson, Friedrich Linz, Lilian Benningsen etc.
Chorus and Orchestra of the Bavarian State Opera, Munich
Joseph Keilberth
Recorded at a live performance, this ‘Meistersinger’ boasts a fine cast and the great Joseph Keilberth is at the helm. Otto Wiener is a rather subdued Sachs and Watson a sweet sounding Eva. Jess Thomas is slightly miscast as Walter as this role doesn’t really suit his voice but he sings beautifully and there is much in his performance to be enjoyed. Hotter makes a dignified yet slightly idiotic Pogner and Kusche is a delightful Beckmesser (he is on the commercial Kempe set). Lenz’s David is wonderfully youthful. There are many renowned though rather ageing Wagner singers in the roles of the Masters and the chorus are stunning. The orchestra play the work with panache and this set has everything to recommend it – BUT... There is something missing... Is it the balance? Who knows? This set is worth it for the singers and Keilberth’s intelligent and well shaped realisation of the score. There is very little in the way of audience noise. This set is worth exploring as it has some wonderful singers but there are some reservations about the overall satisfaction in the delivery of this masterpiece.
The box is damaged and the records are showing signs of wear – some of this is due to the World Record Club pressing. The record price reflects the damage to the box.
