Richard Wagner
Tristan und Isolde (Excerpts)
Act 1 – Prelude
Act 3 – Mild und leise (Liebestod)
Act 1 Scene 3 – Weh, ach wehe! Dies zu dulden
Birgit Nilsson, Grace Hoffman
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
Hans Knappertsbusch
Autographed by Birgit Nilsson- please note that the autograph is very faint hence the reduced price.
This is another LP of 'bleeding chunks' of Wagner. Sadly, the excerpts are not from a complete version but the performances, conducting and singing are splendid. Nilsson is in ringing voice and Hoffman is a perfect foil for Nilsson's Isolde. The orchestra are magnificent and the performance of the Liebestod is particularly memorable as the engineers begin the excerpt quietly but turn up the volume as it goes through to the shattering climax. Although the sound is fiddled, the result is awe inspiring.
