Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Don Giovanni
Tito Gobbi, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Josef Greindl, Ljuba Welitsch, Anton Dermota, Erich Kunz, Irmgard Seefried, Alfred Poell
Chorus of the Vienna State Opera
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
Wilhelm Furtwängler
At a time when 'private' recordings were highly illegal, certain 'under the counter' record producers had pressings made. Many of these pressings were a rather hit and miss affair. This set was made in that era but the Vinyl isn't too bad. The performance is something else. Believe it or not, Furtwängler adopts a fairly brisk tempi and the cast responds wonderfully. Gobbi deserts his usual Puccini/Verdi style and throws himself into the title role with gusto. The rest of the high quality cast is well caught and all of them sound as though they are enjoying themselves. Ljuba Welitsch deserves a special mention as her voice, though light, is thrilling. Josef Greindl, famed Wagnerian villain, is another bonus. The recording is not of the best but it should still please the listener as the balance is very good.

Our records have always been handled with care and stored correctly. However as we are disposing of our entire record collection, time precludes us playing every single item to check whether there are any faults that are not apparent from a purely visual check. To avoid any dispute buyers should be aware that they buy our vinyl with the above proviso in mind.
