Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Don Giovanni
Ezio Pinza, Elisabeth Rethberg, Dino Borgioli, Virgilio Lazzari, Luise Helletsgrüber, Margit Bokor, Herbert Alsen, Karl Ettl
Chorus of the Vienna State Opera
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
Bruno Walter
Live - Salzburg Festival - August 1937
At a time when 'private' recordings were highly illegal, certain 'under the counter' record producers had pressings made. Many of these pressings were a rather hit and miss affair. This set was made in that era but the Vinyl isn't too bad. The performance is something else. Recorded live in 1937, the sound, for its time and the recording conditions, is surprisingly good. The performance is shattering. Forget the somewhat 'holy' reading of 'Don Giovanni'. Walter's tempi are, at times murderously fast and exciting but the singers manage to cope rather well. Pinza is in glorious voice and Rethberg is an utter delight. Naturally, the style of singing is of an earlier generation but there is plenty to enjoy in this historically important sound document.

Our records have always been handled with care and stored correctly. However as we are disposing of our entire record collection, time precludes us playing every single item to check whether there are any faults that are not apparent from a purely visual check. To avoid any dispute buyers should be aware that they buy our vinyl with the above proviso in mind.
