Piano Concerto No. 1
Artur Rubinstein, Piano
RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra
Alfred Wallenstein
At one time, the name of Artur Rubinstein dominated both the record catalogues and the Concert Halls. These days, he has come under quite a bit of criticism for his somewhat lightweight approach to many of his recordings - especially his Chopin and Brahms. This LP should dispel some of these critics as the performances are heart felt and highly musical. His light touch and lack of being too dramatic makes the delivery of the scores a delight. The Schumann is an expansive affair where the orchestra and Giulini supports Rubinstein brilliantly and the balance between the piano and orchestra is very good. The Liszt 'Piano Concerto No 1' is an earlier recording and Rubinstein views the work in a lighter vein than almost every other pianist. There are no pianistic fireworks here but an almost taming of the concerto for the ear that prefers to be embraced calmly.
