Édouard Lalo
Symphonie Espagnole
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Sérénade Mélancolique
Leonid Kogan, violin
Philharmonia Orchestra
Kiril Kondrashin
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Meditation
Leonid Kogan, violin
Paris Conservatoire Orchestra
Constantin Silvestri
Kogan's playing of all these violin works (with Orchestra) is up to the usual standard one has come to expect from such a great violinist. He makes everything sound so easy and effortless. Kondrashin (Lalo, Tchaikovsky 'Sérénade Mélancolique') and Silvestri (Tchaikovsky 'Meditation') are perfect in their support of the soloist and both show that they were at home equally in the role of accompaniment as they were taking centre podium in orchestral music. Naturally, the main interest in the LP is that Kyril Kondrashin has signed the cover.
Cover Autographed by Kiril Kondrashin
The autograph was collected outside the Festival Hall in about 1974 when Kondrashin was still Chief Conductor of the Moscow Philharmonic. I had the privilege of seeing him at many concerts and meeting this Great Conductor many times and it was always a surprise to watch the man on the podium who seemed to have his intense eyes everywhere and in total control of the glorious sounds he managed to draw out of the orchestra and then to meet and talk to him. Face to face he had a slightly impish look and an easy smile. Another thing which never ceased to amaze me was his modesty. He could never take a compliment but always brushed it aside with a shrug and gave all the credit to the music and the orchestra. I only ever saw him with his ‘minders’ who he obviously resented but when they saw that I was merely a music nutter and not a mole who was there to help him defect, left us alone so we could talk candidly.
