Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
The Magic Flute
Kurt Moll, Peter Schreier, Edda Moser, Anneliese Rothenburger, Walter Berry, Olivera Miljakovic, Theo Adam etc.
Chorus and Orchestra of the Bavarian State Opera, Munich
Wolfgang Sawallisch
Forget any ideas of a profound 'Die Zauberflöte' because Sawallisch takes a very different view of the opera. This performance is dramatic with plenty of singers acting their dialogue wonderfully. The cast is, without exception, superb and Sawallisch uses boys for the three kids and not sopranos. We will not give a detailed review of the recording as anything highlighted would diminish the rest of the recording. There is one interesting detail about this set which makes it a must - there is an extra trio which is NEVER used in performances, The recording is warm, close and immediate and the thunder will thrill any lovers of sound effects. This is a very highly recommended version of the opera if you are tired of the slow versions and want a little more life in your Mozart
Recorded: 1973
Book contains a commentary in English and a libretto in German/English
