Richard Wagner
Götterdämmerung
Astrid Varnay, Wolfgang Windgassen, Hermann Uhde, Gustav Neidlinger, Josef Greindl, Natalie Hinsch-Gröndahl, Ira Malaniuk, Maria von Ilosvay, Regina Resnik
Chorus and Orchestra of the Bayreuth Festival 1953
Clemens Krauss
Although the engineers can't seem to make up their minds as to who should receive the balance of sound - either to the stage or the orchestra - this 5 LP set is worth it for its historic value. The cast is littered with huge names from the Wagner world and even the mezzo Regina Resnik sings the Third Norn - this was before smoking took its toll on her voice. Krauss' conducting is full of authority and it's a shame that, in the strange balance we don't get the full impact of his interpretation. Having said all that, the sound is good for its age.
