Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg
Ferdinand Frantz, Gottlob Frick, Benno Kusche, Rudolf Schock, Gerhard Unger, Elisabeth Grümmer, Marga Höffgen, Horst Wilhelm, Walter Stoll, Gustv Neidlinger, Manfred Schmidt, Leopold Clam, Herold Kraus, Robert Koffmane, Anton Metternich, Hanns Pick, Hermann Prey

Choir of St. Hedwig's Cathedral, Berlin
Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra
Rudolf Kempe
This famous LP mono recording needs very little comment from us. The cast, generally, is excellent but Schock does seem a little miscast but he sings valiantly. Grümmer is a perfect Eva and Franz is a dignified but very human Sachs. Kusche's Beckmesser is an utter delight with the renowned Alberich of Gustav Neidlinger making the most of Kothner. Ungers light David has plenty of cheek and energy and his youthful sounding voice suits the role to perfection. Hermann Prey as the Nightwatchman!!! Kempe's conducting is almost faultless and, even given that the set isn't in stereo (it never was) he still manages to bring out plenty of detail and noise, when required. This is a highly recommended set which, even after all these years, sounds good and can stand beside, indeed often above, many modern recordings.
Recorded: 1956
The original libretto is not included in this sale.

To avoid any dispute buyers should be aware that they buy our vinyl with the above proviso in mind.
