Richard Wagner
Lohengrin
Sándor Kónya, Lucine Amara, Jerome Hines, William Dooley, Rita Gorr, Calvin Marsh
Boston Chorus Pro Musica
Boston Symphony Orchestra
Erich Leinsdorf
At the time, this was the most expensive opera recording ever made. There was the use of extra studios and the orchestra and chorus were augmented - it all cost money. However, the recording was jinxed. First, Leontyne Price was due to sing Elsa but she had to drop out through illness so Lucine Amara came in at the last minute. Then, a lot of the cast went down with colds. Things didn't look very promising. What is the result? For me, Kónya is THE Lohengrin. His pure and secure voice is perfect for the role. Amara came in for a lot of criticism but I think she brings out an innocence which Price would not have been able to match. Gorr is frightening as Ortrud. You don't argue with this lady and Dooley is a strong Telramund. Hines makes a dignified Henrich. The orchestra play the opera magnificently and the chorus are a joy. For some odd reason, the London critics have never liked Leinsdorf. Many is the concert I attended which was shattering only to read the following day in the newspaper that the concert was poor. Did we go to the same event? On this recording he controls his forces superbly and his attention to detail never gets in the way of the structure of the opera. We love this performance and the recording was worth every penny (or cent) which was invested in it. Top marks!!!
