Tannhäuser

Chor und Orchester der Deutschen Oper Berlin
Otto Gerdes
This is a decidedly odd recording of 'Tannhäuser'. Otto Gerdes was chiefly a record producer for DG so why he should be entrusted with this major recording is somewhat of a mystery. He was given a wonderfrul allbeit occationally rather strange cast with a famous opera orchestra and chorus. The result is confusing. I am not sure if this is a brliliant interpretation or a disaster. For a start, the Dresden edition is used so the Overture has its powerful ending - and highly truncated Venusberg. Considering Gerdes was a recording engineer, the balance of sound is variable with the solo singers often too near. The recording of the orchestra often makes it a little 'chambery'. The chorus is well captured. Birgit Nilsson, singing both soprano roles at a time when this was rarely done is interesting but one feels that she would have been happier doing an 'Isolde' on the role instead of trying to reign in her huge voice. Windgassen sings and acts wonderfully and the choice of Fischer Dieskau for Wollfram is inspired though he does sound as little uncomfortable in the role. Theo Adam is a fine singer but one feels that Hans Sotin, who sings a minor role, would have been a better casting for the Landgraf. All the rest of the small roles are well cast and there is an adult soprano who sings the Shepherd boy. All in all this is an LP set worth collecting as a second or third version but not a first.

Our records have always been handled with care and stored correctly. However as we are disposing of our entire record collection, time precludes us playing every single item to check whether there are any faults that are not apparent from a purely visual check. To avoid any dispute buyers should be aware that they buy our vinyl with the above proviso in mind.
